Stuff & Thangs

Too much life and not enough sewing...I need more free time! Lots of what free time I do have has been spent watching the Andy Tube channel on YouTube. Andy teaches vintage sewing machines. I am learning so much about my machines and have been gathering supplies needed to take one apart and restore it. Andy is doing a series right now on a Singer 404, step by step, take it apart, clean it and put it back together. It is so interesting!

The other day I stopped by Walmart to get a French bread, ham and Swiss cheese to make sandwiches for dinner. Heading to checkout I passed by the fabric area and discovered it packed full of clearance fabric. I picked up an entire bolt of this navy blue print on white, perfect for the backing on the Dresden plate quilt! Best of all the fabric was $1.50 a yard so I got 8.5 yards for $12.75! I am not kidding!

How is the Dresden plate coming along? Slowly. It would go faster if I actually sewed on it, right? I tried a few of the scrappy corners and I think I like the look so I am working on the rest of those today.

These blocks are so big! They seem to have taken over my studio. Big blocks will probably make for a lightening fast "putting together" when I get to it.

I need to come up with a border idea for this one. Suggestions?

Thank you for visiting my blog today!

  2. That fabric is perfect for your quilt. Great find! Thanks for the link, never heard of it before and I think I have a lot of attachments for the old Singer so I will check it out.

  3. The backing is awesome choice. Love the top and scrappy corners. Lots of border choices to consider. If you stayed in the same color field maybe a blue with white polka dots?

  4. Loving the quilt blocks Sharon, imho I would do a plain navy border. However much as I admire them I do not quilt . The backing will be just perfect and what a bargain. Hope the machine will be as good as new for its spring clean.

  5. Love the pattern on this one. Good luck with the finish. I know what you mean about not enough spare time. I'd love to have a go at Quilting but just haven't got the time.

  6. Gorgeous Dresden you are creating. I'd go for a plain blue border to accentuate the other lovely blues you have used. Great bargain the backing fabric was.

  8. Thanks for the Andy Tube link! I've been meaning to find some YouTube videos on vintage machine resto...just never got around to it.
Love those dresden blocks...and the corners! My first thought was a piano key border then decided that would distract from the dresdens. So. How about a 1" scrappy blue border, followed by a 3"white border... and then make the blinding blue? Of course, you could always go a little nuts and use some variegated blue thread and embroider some vines on a 5" white border? Fun stuff! I think I enjoy making blocks and then see what kind of quilt comes out of them... as opposed to just following a pattern? Have fun with it!

  9. Several years ago I bought some fabric from wal mart and made pillow cases for my young son's bed..Washed them less than 5 times and the material started fading..I thought then ..so glad I didn't spend hours making a quilt with this fabric..Hope you have better luck than I did

  10. My Friend just made one of these and just one 4-5"inch border. You could even make yours a scrappy blue...using all the fabrics from the blocks?? (FYI: I;m your newest follower as I just added you to my blogroll) SMILES! V:)
