The Dancing Stick

Brodie said this Dancing Stick took him about 14 months to complete. If I remember correctly, the stick itself is about three and a half feet long. That is a good chunk of beadwork, isn't it?

The beads are laid over deerhide. The loop at the top and the feathers are attached to soft hide as well.

Brodie says sticks were used in brush when tracking. Now they use them when dancing. A lot of you have probably never seen American Indians dancing. I assure you, it is inspiring! Living in Oklahoma we probably take it for granted. How I wish you could see Brodie's work for yourself.

I asked Brodie about the seemingly misplaced beads. "It can't be perfect." He said serenely. The Spirit guides him where to place the beads, and he prays.

Thank you for visiting my blog today!

  2. Gorgeous! My husband worked with Native Americans when we lived in North Dakota (he also worked with tribes in South Dakota) & we were invited to many pow-wows. Truly inspiring! Blessings, Shirlee

  4. Does Brodie take his work to the Gathering of Nations Pow Wow in Albuquerque, New Mexico? If not, he really should. His work is beautiful. Someday I hope to get to the Gathering of Nations. I lived in Albuquerque for 8 years and not got to go.

  5. It is stunning work - you are so lucky to have seen some dancing. Brodie's "It cant' be perfect" statement reminds me of the Amish - they believe that about their quilting. Deliberately putting a mistake into their quilts as only God makes perfection.

  12. Really incredible work. I can hardly do the Mill Hill Kits, much less anything that large and intricate. Brodie is really quite an artist, "Spirit" driven!!

  13. What beautiful work Brodie does! Thank You so very much for sharing it Sharon!
I use to attend the Shinnecock Pow Wow every September when I lived on Long Island. I always got a peaceful feeling when I was on their land and I always enjoyed watching the dancing and their crafts. I am glad I have a few souvenirs that I treasure. I also use to live near the Poospatuck reservation and was lucky enough to buy a handmade Christmas wreath from there. I still hang it on my door at Christmas time. The ornaments hanging from it are handmade and hand painted with their tribe name and symbols. It certainly is a treasure to me.

  16. Wow! That is amazing!! I grew up in Southern California so there was alot of native american history there as well, so I grew up around it. I think it is such a gorgeous culture! And he is right, from what I hear it is considered bad luck for ANY craft to be perfect...weaving, beading, whatever...there is always a mistake in it. If it is perfect,it is as if they are challenging the gods, who are supposed to be the "only perfect ones"....like disrespect to the gods. So think of that next time you have a mistake in your stitching! leave it there and keep on stitching!! LOL
