What big teeth you have!

Sheba at about one year of age.

Sheba hasn't really been acting like herself lately. She is ten years old now and she has lost quite a bit of weight the last few months, she is also thirsty, itchy, restless and panting. I had the vet out to look at her last week and today she went in to have her teeth cleaned and to have a full blood work panel done. We picked her up this evening. The vet said everything looked good except she had hyperthyroidism and a heart murmur. The vet comes back out to check her thyroid again in ten days and we go from there. Sheba may have to have surgery to remove the thyroid or take medicine ~ we just don't know yet. She might also need to start heart medicines, depending on how that develops. Right now, I'm just glad everything else looked good. I understand both conditions are common in older dogs and as I was studying a chart in the vet's office that said in people years Sheba is 60, whoa!

Sheba has nice clean teeth now.

All the better to eat you with, my dear!

  6. Hugs to Sheba, We have a cardiac cat who has been on heart meds for almost 6 years now. He is also 10 years old and he is doing great. I am sure your vet will come up with a really good program for you.

  10. Sheba is lovely:)and it sounds like there is something that can be done to benefit her :)
Our border collie was on a special diet from the age of 11 for an under functioning kidney and a couple of other tablets later on for other minor niggles. She loved only one brand of dog food and we were worried she wouldn't take to her new dry food regime..how wrong we were. She loved it:)

  11. She is so cute! I'm glad that the problems she has developed can be taken care of relatively easily. I have an elderly dog too, so I understand your worries.

  21. Good luck to Sheba. My dog is now 98 or 105 ... don't really know her exact age because I adopted her as an adult. She's having more and more problems, but we're doing what we can to ease her discomfort. So sad when they get old.

  23. Adorable pic!

I noticed my Celeste has been panting quite a bit since this past spring. Persnickety, too! Someone pointed out to me that she's almost 50 in people years. Dog-o-pause maybe?
