For lack of a better title. Or photo. Just try Googling "boobies" to find a photo. Or maybe not!
Every October I tell myself I need to get a mammogram done. I'm 45 and I should have had four of them by now but for some reason I keep putting it off. Fail. Busy with this and that. Forget to call for an appointment, only thinking of it when it's late in the evening. Excuses. Excuses!
When Cathey's breast cancer returned I thought about it more often. Busy, busy, forget, forget. More fail. Then Cathey died. I promised myself I would get my mammogram done. I stopped being busy and I stopped forgetting to call and make an appointment. I owed it to Cathey and to myself.
Yesterday I went and showed my boobies to a stranger who mashed them flat and took photos. But she was a nice stranger! It was nothing like everyone said. It wasn't painful or even uncomfortable. That said, I have an extreme pain tolerance but it didn't hurt at all. (I still feel pain but it takes rather a lot to bother me.) Plus, it took all of 20 minutes and that included filling out all the forms.
They called today with my results...and everything looks great. Which is awesome but I've already got a reminder set on my phone to make my appointment for next year.

ReplyDeleteI also recently went ~ I thought it had been two years, and yes, losing Cathey prompted me to stop making those excuses....found out it had been four years ~ yikes! Still waiting to hear my results, hope it is a good sign!

ReplyDeleteHad mine in September! :) Been going every year sine I turned 40....45 now. Like you said not painful; less than 30 minutes...in...mash-mash...mash-mash ...out. It's worth it girls. Glad you went Daffy.
ReplyDeleteMammo for Cathey! To encourage others to test in honor of her is a great tribute that I think she would be proud of, and could possibly be responsible for saving a life. If someone is afraid it may hurt for a brief minute, think of the pain she endured for months. Go for it!!!
ReplyDeleteGood for you! I'm 43 and had my 3rd one in Aug. I had an aunt pass away this May from breast cancer. I hop all women get this done every year. They owe it to themselves and everyone who loves them!
ReplyDeleteNo mammograms for me anymore as there is nothing left to mammogram. I had a bilateral mastectomy 7 years ago. My cancer was caught by a routine screening mammogram when I was 44. All you youngish women need to get your mammograms! I am alive today because I got mine.

ReplyDeleteYou did something for yourself and it could save your life!!! I am happy that you finally gave in and did it. I have been getting once since I was 30. My mother died from breast cancer when she was 51.. Horrible disease I hope they soon find a cure!

ReplyDeleteSadly in the UK and Ireland you dont get mammograms until you are 50/55. And it is wrong: I was 41 when I got it: I have met lots of other 30s and 40 women who have it; we are losing a generation of funding because the guys holding the purse strings claim screening does not protect. What the???? I am so very pleased yours came back clear. Means you can get on with your life for another year (Do you have them yearly??) but dont forget those monthly gropes aka checks rofl xx
ReplyDeleteThey don't do them till you are 50 here, and then once every three years. They do do the recall and appointments automatically though so you don't have to remember yourself.

Glad you went!!! That is all it takes: 20 mns of your life to save your life :) I'll reach the big 40 next year, so I'm guessing I should hear from the squashy booby team soon...

Bravo! My Aunt got breast cancer when she was in her early 40's, it returned when she was 50, she died at 51. Young. My doctor told me I should start getting them at 35. I turned 35, was pregnant, but got my first mammogram, shortly after delivery. I've had 7mammograms to date and will get my 8th in January.

As a 3 year breast cancer survivor (who found my cancer at the age of 49 through a routine mammogram and I know it saved my life!!) I know your family and friends are thanking you for taking care of yourself...the world would be a different place without you in it!! *Hugs*
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty religious about going to get mine done. I'm also a bit of a radiology nerd too. My mom retired from 35 years in radiology. I love the digital technology. It's a big improvement over the old fashioned films.

ReplyDeleteWonderful to hear you had good results, I have pain when I get a mammogram I have pain with a mammo, by the way my Husband said oh it cannot hurt that bad so I had the tech let him in to see what gets done he almost passed out, so now he is a more tender when talking about me getting a mammagram.

ReplyDeleteI am another in the UK who started at fifty and I was recalled after the first one..had an anxious seven day wait,but it was all good.I will always go for my screening appointments,I feel fortunate that they are offered and available, though I think they are offered later than I think they should be.

Well done , They called me in once and said they had seen some thing , but not to worry ! well I thought that was it, I went into hospital and they showed me on the x ray, and could I get changed to see the doctor . I was getting changed in this little room covered in butterflies on the wall and that was it I made my mind up I am not going to give in , the doctor called me in and she tested me all over untill my new xray came in, and then after a time she said you can go now , I said when do I have to come back she said no what ever it was has gone that was 6 yrs ago.
ReplyDeleteSo I know the feeling when they tell you there is some thing there , but that day my faith was very strong . So there is hope for any one who gets called in, after that I was so grateful my girls and I at my cross stitch club stitched flowers of the month for one of the waiting rooms hoping one day I could give another the chance to have faith. Hugs.
I've had more than the expected seven because of the dense breast problem. I wish they'd invent something that dealt better with dense breasts but for now I'll keep going back on when they inevitably need more pictures.
ReplyDeleteWhen my mom was diagnosed 14 years ago, I was told they would consider me 10 years older than I really was and I would need a mammogram every year from then on.
ReplyDeleteHad my mom gone for a mammogram yearly as she should have, her cancer would not have progressed to stage 4 with a 10 cm tumor.
I can happily tell you that she is a 14 year survivor and I faithfully get my mammogram every year!
I have had a few scares in the past...get mine every year.
ReplyDeleteSo glad to hear you got your mammogram done. I have had 2 breast surgeries done to prevent cancer and both times it was found on my yearly mammogram. What I had, you could not feel to the touch. So I tell everyone I can to get them done.
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear you followed through! We have a local breast screening clinic at our hospital who send out the reminders and then book your appt. I always make sure to book mine. Like you, I have a high pain tolerance and have no problems during mine. I also make sure to have a colonoscopy done as required. Too many of my friends have passed due to colon cancer.

In 2006 an annual mammogram literally saved my life! Make sure you have one EVERY year!
ReplyDeleteGlad you went and had it taken care of! I have had mine already this year. I found a lump one year but after the biopsy it was found non cancerous (praise God) so now I have to go every year.
