A Tiny Blue Box

Again, I am behind my time. I have all these posts photographed, written out in my head and even planned when they need to be posted. Do they get blogged? NO! This must stop!

The sweetest package arrived a couple weeks ago. I wasn't expecting anything and Dash was looking like, "What did you buy now?" but it turned out to be a RAK for me! Kim, of Wisdom with Needle & Thread is sending off RAKs at the speed of light! Look what I got...

Isn't that beautiful? Kim paints on porcelain, such tiny, delicate flowers! Wow, look at that gold paint. If you look carefully you can tell it's painted by hand. That is one steady hand! Kim also beaded this chatelaine for my scissors. The beads are heavy and so smooth they don't pull my hair. Isn't this the nicest gift?

Look how teeny Kim can paint. The inside of the box has a little flower too.

Thank you so much Kim, I love this RAK!

WIP Wednesday

I've been hard at work on  The Finery of Nature. This is one HARD project to photograph! It is almost impossible to get a clear, in-focus picture with decent color. Out of two dozen photos this was the best and it's crap but you get the idea!

The little nest is taking shape. The yellow-gold looks odd without the earth colors surrounding it but it's nice to stitch a color that stands out as the foundation to count from. I doubt I'm even half through with this block since the nest is pretty solid with stitches. If you are wondering what the finished project looks like see my sidebar. The picture is a link to a larger photo but the kit is no longer available except on the secondhand market.

Keebles asked if I'm using a light box to help see? Yes, it's invaluable for stitching on dark fabric! What is a light box? It's a fluorescent light inside a translucent plastic box. The light shines up through  your fabric so you can see the holes easier. Here is a snap of mine:

The funny square shape under the fabric is the pattern. I know there are DIY lightbox instructions on the web but I have this one, Light Tracer 2. Actually, I stole this light box from my daughter,  Jessie ~ but since she left it in my basement...it was fair game, right?

Over the weekend, I found this in my mailbox:

Isn't this a beautiful Christmas ornament? It was an RAK from Becky of The Stitchin' Post. Look at that carefully beaded edge...and that adorable wire hanger. I was so tickled to receive this and I can't wait for the holidays so I can hang it on my tree! Thank you, Becky!

TUSALers be aware that Friday is the new moon! I need to find time to add recent members to the list so if your name isn't on there yet...I will get to it ~ eventually!

March Madness Failure

I am perfectly aware how atrociously late I am at updating for Theme-a-licious. I have been dawdling because I totally failed my plans for March Madness. I only completed two projects and of those, only one got finish-finished. I meant to stitch and finish one a week. Yes, me...the Queen of Slow Stitching. Stop laughing! I really meant to do it!

My first finish was the Bent Creek Red Winged Blackbird stitcher's pocket:

This was sent as a secret RAK to Barbi! She received it earlier this week and you can read about it here.

My next project was La D Da's A Bird in Hand:

Horrible wrinkles and lighting here. This was stitched using Nina's Threads as part of Nina's Threads project. Nina chose the colors...I just stitched! This still needs finishing but I should get to that soon!

For April our theme reads:

Amazon April
Dip your needle into the vast swath of fabric dedicated to your BIGGEST projects!

I kinda have a problem with that...and it's called "obligation stitching." I  was chosen to be the next stitcher on three different traveling patterns. Oh holy crows! How did that happen? No one enters giveaways expecting to be drawn

My first project is underway and two more are being mailed to me. Instead of working on Finery of Nature as I planned, my Amazon April will be filled with these three projects. My Amazon task, lol. Be ready for drawings! Two of these Traveling Patterns will be drawn by lottery. As I complete each one, I will put it up for grabs to the next lucky stitcher!

Blackbirds and Cherries

When I was half-way through stitching this blackbird I kept seeing red cherries on black fabric in my mind. I knew I'd seen that fabric before but I didn't own any of it. I couldn't tell if this wanted to be a little pillow or a pocket or what but I was sure it needed black fabric with red cherries so I stopped by Hobby Lobby on my way home from work and bought a yard. Yes, Lynda and Kathy (you smarties) it is a Mary Engelbreit print. The very minute I was done stitching I was ready to finish and had decided this wanted to be a stitcher's pocket. Now, even though I had never made one before...it turned out very well!

Design ~ Red Winged Blackbird
Designer ~ Bent Creek
Fabric ~ 28 count Khaki Monaco
 Fiber ~ DMC

This finish was sent to Barbi of Blissfully Stitching as an RAK. You can read about it here.

The next time I make one of these, I think I might try to make the backing piece a tiny bit larger and see if I can't reduce the part where the pocket goes on. Kinda even things up? I forgot to put something IN the pocket part when I took the pictures ~ whoops! The ric rac was so easy and big thanks go to Karen for her  recent tips about it!

Since Thursday was the full moon ~ that means it's WIPocalypse time and that means ~ I'm late! I was too busy finishing to bother posting and I'm sticking to that story. At least I had an actual finish to post and that is the whole point of WIPocalypse anyway! Thank you, Measi...for hosting this...I can chalk up another finish out of that over-full bin!

Meet My Mummy

There was an mysterious fat package in my mailbox last week. It was very heavy. What could it be? I was a little grim thinking maybe this was a donation for the Totally Useless giveaway, oh dear! Surely nobody sent me a two-pound pincushion? That package is going to be heavy enough as it is!

Imagine my glee when I opened it and discovered this darling *squee* mummy inside. Last year, I had admired Tanya's Halloween decor and truly coveted the mummy she had made. Tanya knew I loved her so much she sent her to me! Mine! My own mummy! Sweet Miss Mummy is residing spookily on my bookshelf for the holiday season. I love her to pieces. Thank you Tanya!

I also received another package last week, this one expected. Every now and again I see something from the UK I just have to have and I'll call on my good friend Lindsay to get it for me. Then, in return, I'll do a favor when asked. Of course, every now and again one of us will open our mailbox to find the other has filled it with something unexpected and awesome. (wait, on second thought, Lindsay probably has a door slot for mail deliveries *giggle*) Anyway, I saw this Margaret Sherry magazine on Bec's blog. Ooo, Margaret Sherry! I could not resist, so an email to Lindsay was in order. Thank you Lindsay! You too, Bec, you shameless enabler you!

According to Sharon, I've been teasing you with hints about my new project. Okay, I'll stop now! I finished kitting up and started stitching yesterday. I'm going to stitch Prairie Schooler's Twelve Day's of Christmas. Each square as an individual ornament. I've been looking for that perfect "12 Days" chart and have even bought several but they were either too big (I don't want 5x7 inch ornaments) or charted as a group only. I was so pleased to find this design.

One of you "out there" is stitching this too but I'm sorry, I can't remember who you are. If you've been blogging this design recently it was probably you, speak up! You were my inspiration ~ thank you!

So, I snagged one Prairie Schooler chart off eBay. I've pulled my colors. Some I didn't like (copper red? For Christmas? Ewww!) and some did not match the model close enough and those were swapped out. I measured out enough 32 count Lugana, tea-stained it and cut it into 12 ornament sized pieces.

And here is my start! Wow, this is a really fast stitch. I started last night and only had a short time for stitching. It would be nice to have these all done in time for the Christmas tree this year but I know it won't happen. I'm not a fast stitcher or finisher. Plus, I work full time. I thought about making this my 2012 project and stitch & finish one ornament each month, very doable for me. But I couldn't wait to start. I just about went insane the weeks I waited to start Crabby All Year, that time. I'm not set up for waiting, I guess. I want it NOW!

I still need to find fabric for the backing. I figured I'd wait and get a couple of them stitched so I could color match. Darn, I have to go to Joann's Fabric store. What a shame. I can't wait! I hate waiting!

Surprising Someone Soon

Presenting the rest of my drunken Sunday finishing orgy fun. Here is a little ornament I've stitched just because. Cutest kitty cat ever! I adore Bent Creek. I stuffed with poly-fil so it wouldn't weigh too much.

Design ~ Flair "Smile"
Designer ~ Bent Creek
Fabric ~ 28 count Daffycat-dyed purple scrap*
Fiber ~ DMC

*Scrap meaning, "I'm too lazy to try and figure out what the heck I stitched this on!"

Best of all, this little cutie is going to be sent to someone that reads this blog! I will be mailing this out as soon as I can ~ so be watching that mailbox ~ it might be you!
This RAK went to Parsley of Seasons Of My Mind!

You all seemed to like my ladybug scissors, and I had many questions about them. They came as a set pictured here. The scissors, very handy tweezers and the little plastic ladybug is a thread cutter you can attach with self-adhesive pad. I've done a little searching and The Nordic Needle looks to have a good price.

TUSAL'ers don't forget the 2nd July New Moon is this Saturday, the 30th! Speaking of the TUSAL, I have a few donations to post about. I haven't forgotten. Maybe this Saturday!

One Fat Rabbit

The finishing is finally complete on my current project. Isn't he a funny fat bunny? I keep finding rabbit designs in my stash that I must stitch now. It must be the season. Pictured here, on a handful of ORTs from my jar...I created a little pin pillow and even made some pins to go with it. Side note ~ beads for pins are kinda expensive aren't they? I about fainted when I saw the ones I wanted were $10 for six beads...shown here are my second choice beads ~ at a kinder price.

Design ~ Springology (portion)
Designer ~ The Trilogy
Fabric ~ 32 count Jobelan, lightly tea-dyed
Fiber ~ DMC

It's been a while since I've sent off a Random Act of Kindness (or RAK,) hasn't it? I think this is my first RAK this year. Oh yeah, surprise! This Fat Rabbit pin pillow & pins is being mailed off tomorrow to someone that reads this blog! Maybe it's you?

This RAK went to Jackie of Jackie's Stitches!

Wondering...

...what my mail carrier must think when I get packages every couple of days. Maybe, "That lady has gone crazy on eBay again...?"

My second Ornament Swap came this week. This one is from Lisa V in Australia. I just love the red and gold colors Lisa has used. And that tassel rocks! The backing fabric has a red & gold theme and the overall ornament is expertly constructed as well.

Thank you, Lisa! I love this ornament ~ soooo much!

Remember I needed some mauve silk ribbon? Glenna was able to get her hands on some to send me. Somehow, she couldn't resist including a very sweet RAK in the package. I love surprises!

I really like these Victoria Sampler bird ornaments. They are just the sweetest images...except for maybe the #2 leaflet ~ those were kind of an odd pair. Thank you so much, Glenna! I really appreciate you getting the ribbon for me and the chart was such a nice gesture.

I haven't finished the bunny fob yet...not had any stitching time this week. It's "Spring Cleaning" at work (my idea) and "the boss" must do her share or she can't expect her employees to do the same. Lead by example, I say! This means I have trashed my hands with all the scrubbing and scouring. No one feels like stitching with cracked, dried out fingers. Blech!

An RAK & The Next TP Stitcher

Recently, Lynn stitched the cutest kitty ever! When she was through with the design she sent the pattern to me...along with a few other charts she thought I might enjoy. Now, the charts are so perfect for me I think Lynn must know me well! Aren't RAKs the best? Thank you so much, Lynn! I can't wait to get started stitching!

Are you ready?...The next Traveling Pattern Stitcher is Karen of Karen's Handiwork. Congratulations, Karen! The chart will be on it's way tomorrow. Anyone interested in stitching the Traveling Pattern should bookmark Karen's blog so you will know when it comes up for the next stitcher! Thanks to everyone for entering and for your enthusiasm for this project!

She's Crazy

You all know who she is (or someone just like her.) She's the one who starts impossibly huge projects then has the nerve to complete them. She makes wild plans and pulls them off. She even makes you laugh uncontrollably with the funniest writing. You love her because she brightens your days. But she's crazy. And that's all there is to it. Back in the day lunatics were put away in bedlam. However, a crazy stitchy friend is a different bird altogether!

With my crazy friend in mind, I designed this freebie.

Stitched it up on blazing hot pink fabric, which I knew she'd adore. I even dyed the fabric myself. Maybe I'm a little crazy too?

And sewed it into a pinpillow stuffed with walnut shells. This is being mailed off as an RAK to my crazy friend. I hope she likes it!
This RAK went to
Missy Ann of Deep Inside Missy!
(Post edited to remove link to a now defunct blog.)

If you would like to stitch Raven Lunatic email me for a copy at: daffy-cat AT hotmail DOT com. Please, put "freebie request" in the subject line and tell me the title(s) of the pattern(s) you are requesting.

You must have the free Adobe Reader program installed on your computer to view/print the pattern, or a similar PDF viewer.

Who likes pie?

I like pie! Pumpkin, pecan, chocolate. I'm not as fond of fruit pies but I'll still eat 'em. Of all though, I think pumpkin is my favorite. I took a Lizzie*Kate design and used two of the squares in it to make up a tiny little fob. Just the right size for these pretty silver scissors.
One side is pumpkin...

...and the other side is pie! Is this cute or what?

Design ~ November Flip It #F32
Designer ~ Lizzie*Kate
Fabric ~ 28 count scrap
Fiber ~ DMC
Finish ~ Scissor fob

.
This wee fob is on it's RAK way to someone soon! Could it be you? What is RAK, you ask? An RAK is a Random Act of Kindness...a little gift sent in surprise to brighten someones day. Of course ~ I can only send an RAK to someone if I already have their address. It HAS to be a surprise! If you don't think I have YOUR address maybe you'd better email me. *hint hint*

I'm still having trouble with the blogs in my sidebar linking to feeds instead of the actual blog. Google's Blogger Help Forum SUCKS. I cannot figure out what is wrong. No one else seems to have the problem. I may have to just delete the whole freakin' thing and add my blogs into a link list. I have well over 600 blogs in my reader so that is going to take a while! Daunting task. So don't panic if my Blog List disappears and suddenly you aren't listed in whatever I decide to use. I will get to you!

*Gasp Pant Sigh*

I've been too busy to blog, can you imagine? It's been crazy around here. No stitching, no blog reading, no posting...I miss you guys! I plan to have a nice relaxing weekend, catch up on my blogs and do some stitching. Serious stitching.

In the midst of the chaos came a suprise in the mail from Patty of Hanging On By A Thread. What a gorgeous RAK! Stitched in my favorite color ~ green and the most beautiful handmade pins. Isn't this pinkeep scrummy? It's stuffed with crushed walnut shells so it smells good and has a lovely weight to it. Thank you so much Patty. I cherish it!

One of the things keeping me busy is some cleaning & redecorating. We've been working on the living room. We moved the couch. Fifteen tennis balls under the couch? Now you know for sure a Border Collie lives here! And don't feel bad that maybe all her tennis balls were stuck under the couch. There were at least thirty still in her toy basket...

After tomorrow, I have FIVE days off work. I can't remember the last time I took more than a long weekend off. See what I mean about serious stitching plans? I'm talking major stitch-ass complications here, girls. Bring it on!

An Autumn RAK

I know...I should be working on my Snapper Year but I got this in my head and couldn't stop thinking about it until I stitched and finished it! Do you get that way? I know you must!

I think I am stuck on these Bent Creek crows & pumpkins. They are just too cute. And Autumn is just around the corner so I'm all geared up for stitching for it! I stitched the same little crow & pumpkin again only this time over-one and finished it as a magnetic needle minder. These little needle minders are SO handy. I received one from Holly a couple of years ago and it is my most treasured stitching tool. I probably couldn't stitch without it! Holly even made a great tutorial on how to finish them...click here. To make these into needle minders simply put a strong magnet inside before you finish. However, Holly got one little something wrong, the forms aren't made of aluminum they are steel. Magnets won't stick to aluminum!

This is on it's way tomorrow to surprise someone who reads this blog!

Clutter and Mess

You see, I am a pack rat. That is all there is to it. I once saw a sign that says, "I'm creative...don't expect me to be neat too!" That's me to a T. Fortunately, I am also obsessive/compulsive. So, while I may gather clutter, eventually my OCD will kick in and I will have a "neatness fest" and get rid of the piles of junk! Um...I'm still waiting for it to kick in this time 'round...

Apparently, I won Wanda's blog drawing last month or June, was it? This pretty pin arrived sometime during that week my mom was in the hospital. It got lost in my junk. I'm so sorry for not acknowledging this Wanda! That was one crazy time for me. Isn't this an unusual creation? And so pretty! Thank you Wanda!

There are piles behind me on the floor.

There are piles above those piles.

There are piles to the left of my laptop.

And there are piles to the right.

How can one be creative with all this clutter? It's amazing how fast this stuff grows...
.

My Autumn RAK has arrived in Canada at last! The little blackbird pin pillow went to dear Lynn of Kearnel's Korner. I'm so happy she liked what I made. It was great fun stitching for her! Now, we just wait for the next one to arrive!

A ladybug RAK

Do you know what? I have discovered that if I stay off the computer I get more stitching done! Can you imagine? It's true...this little ladybug fob is actually my second finish this week but I'm not showing the other one until it is finished-finished as it's an RAK too. Yup, this ladybug fob & scissors is on it's way to someone who reads this blog.
Edit: This RAK went to Annette!

Design ~ June Flip-it (portion)
Designer ~ Lizzie*Kate
Fabric ~ 32 count tea-dyed Belfast
Fiber ~ DMC

Do you like seeing the RAKs before they are received? Or would you rather me wait to post? I kinda liked the idea of showing the photo of what's coming and then having it show up in surprise at someones house. My last RAK has still not been received but it had a ways to go so I'm not worried yet!

Thank you all for the well-wishes last weekend. We had a blast in Tulsa! We saw Inception (awesome movie) at the IMAX, went stash shopping, cheered the Talons at Arena Football (they lost,) and ate out a lot. I would have showed pictures but as this was our 25th anniversary it was kinda private. (There, that sounds much better than saying, "Sharon forgot the freakin' camera again and even if she had remembered to take it she would have forgotten to take photos anyway," doesn't it???) Yeah, I'm scatterbrained that way. We went to a "new to Tulsa" place called Baker's Street Pub...which I saw as we were coming out of Joann's. "Beer!" I gasped, "Let's get a beer!" It was pretty hot outside so the beer went down easy. The pub was fun, decorated up English style and I really, really liked their faux bookshelf doors to the bathrooms!

Sorry to disappoint but there can be no stash report. Everything I bought was for exchanges and RAKs! I did get loads of drool-worthy stuffs though, I promise!

An RAK for me!

It's been a perfectly horrid week. How nice it was to arrive home one night to find a package in the mailbox with an RAK from Lei of And Sew it goes! Isn't this the most clever pincushion? And it's LADYBUGS ~ my favorite! This is so well put together and I can't even find where it was sewed together after stuffing. Magic, I tell you! This really & truly made my whole week, Lei. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I suppose I must tell you about this terrible week, since I've already mentioned it and don't want anyone to worry about me. Monday evening my mother was taken to the hospital having seizures. They discovered her potassium was below a fatal level. After a few hours she went into cardiac arrest and she was brought back with CPR and a jolt of electricity. They kept her in the cardiac ICU until Thursday evening and then moved her to a regular room. Now, we wait to see if they can discover why things went wrong and find out what's to be done. It has been a long week with driving to the city every day and spending long hours at the hospital. I was able to take a few days off work during the week so I could be there. My dad is just beside himself as you can imagine.
.
I do apologise, the RAK in my last post has not gotten mailed yet. I will try to get it sent this week. The computer hasn't even been turned on until today. I have been moderating comments left on my blog from my iPhone and checking email from there too. If you are waiting on an email from me, I will get to it! It is going to be SCARY to open my reader; I am sure I will be overwhelmed with posts to read! I am going to try to get through a few of them today. You will excuse me if I don't leave many comments...

Poor Sheba has been bewildered with the stressful goings-on and I discovered a couple of days ago she has sucked her back foot until it is raw and bloody. She has always comfort-sucked her paws, just never like this! I have been washing it with a dab of shampoo in warm water, smearing it with antibacterial ointment and spraying it with bitter apple (a taste deterrent for dogs.) It looks a little better but she is fretting over it and I know she has still been sucking it when we are gone. I don't know how she stands the bitter apple! Pets are as bad as children when it comes to the worrying about them.

I will try to get back to my regular blogging routine as soon as possible. I really miss you all.

It ORT to be Autumn

Seriously? Isn't it time for Fall to be here? We had above average temperatures in April and below for May. Way above for June and so far July has been very rainy and below average, but still very warm. Up & down, up & down. Stop the roller coaster! I want off, already! I'm wishing for Autumn and cool temperatures. I love the colors and the scents of Fall, the cold nights and brisk mornings. Feeling the need for Autumn made me search out something to stitch that matched my mood. Then, when I saw this little crow & pumpkin, I knew it was meant to be an RAK! Yup, this pin pillow is being packed up and mailed this week to someone who reads this blog!
Edit: This RAK went to Lynn of Kearnel's Korner!

Design ~ Autumn Row (portion)
Designer ~ Bent Creek
Fabric ~ 28 count Lugana
Fiber ~ DMC
Finish ~ Pin Pillow stuffed with crushed walnut shells

On the back side, I stitched one of the crows over-one. The border of each side is Smyrna crosses worked over-four.
.

If you would like to be on my list for a possible RAK (Random Act of Kindness) one day, just email me your mailing address. There is a link to my email in my sidebar ~ find the post-box picture. Anyone, anywhere is welcome! Only...I can't consider sending you a surprise if I don't have your address, right?

It's that time again! ORT time, I mean! The TU SAL continues. My ORT jar got a workout this round. There are threads from Snapper Year, an exchange ornament, Peacock Cypher and the RAK. Alas, my frog jar has plenty too! These are all frogged ORTs from the Christmas ornament in my last post. If you would like to join us in the stitch-a-long, grab a Totally Useless jar, save those Old Ratty Threads and post a photo of your jar at the new moon! There is also a link in my sidebar for information about the Totally Useless SAL.

Sushi Cats

A mysterious package arrived in the mail. When I saw this Sushi Cats fabric inside I gave a snort of amusement. Spotting the dismayed, bug-eyed goldfish held aloft with chopsticks sent me into guffaws of unmatched hilarity. OMG I laughed so hard!

Best of all this wonderful fabric is carefully sewn into a stitching bag by Myra and sent to me RAK! Myra's sewing is lovely ~ even the inside edges are finished. And look at the kitty cat charm on the zipper! Grrr, my camera is goggling at the metallic bling in the fabric and refuses to focus properly. This was a fabulous surprise, Myra. Thank you so much! *squee* blogging friends are the best...

Oops!...I Did It Again

Here is another little RAK going out tomorrow to someone reading this blog! These are so much fun. I cannot resist making RAKs right now. They are on my mind constantly. I should be stitching on Snapper Year, right? But April is a little gloomy so I needed this to brighten up the week! The fabric this is pictured on is just for a pretty photo, the back of this piece is linen stitched with initials...which I can't show or it might give away the surprise!
Edit: This RAK went to Karen!

Design ~ USA Squared
Designer ~ Lizzie*Kate
Fabric ~ 28 count blue/white gingham linen
Fiber ~ DMC
Finish ~ Pin Pillow with crushed walnut shells & Lavender blossoms

If you would like to be included in my RAK list send me an email with your mailing address and your blog link. You might get a surprise in the mail from me someday!

Stitching Bloggers are the best

Quickie snap (roflol) of my start on Snapper Year's April. This took me forever to start...mainly because of being nervous about placement. The border chart comes separate from the monthly charts and it is really difficult to tell if you are putting things in the right place. You notice I still haven't started that tricky border? Because it scares the living hell out of me! I'll get to it when I get up the nerve...

I won Mary's blogoversary giveaway on Colorado Stitcher. The giveaway was a lovely pair of scissors...but look what I found when I opened the box. Mary made the beautiful fob and the artist's trading card. Everything is in my favorite colors too! Thank you so much Mary!

Speaking of giveaways.
Edgar of Blacksheep's bit of the web is celebrating his third blogoversary and Patty of Hanging On By A Thread is celebrating her birthday with a giveaway. Good luck!

I am still collecting addresses for RAKs!
Thanks to all of you for the positive comments on my last post regarding RAKs. I've received lots of emails containing those coveted addresses, plus sent my own out a few times. If you haven't sent me your address, why not? No place is too far to mail. Don't be shy asking to be included! I am going to have such fun doing RAKs! A BIG SPECIAL THANKS goes to Hazel of Quietly Stitching and Lynda of A Cozy Little Place for Stitching for joining in on the fun. They are both seeking addresses for their own RAKs.

One RAK still in transit. This one isn't stitched, just a little something I thought my special person would like. It was mailed the same day as Becky's RAK but it has a bit farther to go!
