A Blogging Post

...or rather, a mishmash post that has too many topics to properly title!

The Traveling Pattern

Yes, I STOLE Julie's picture!

First up ~ my Traveling Pattern is on the move again! Julie just finished stitching and is offering it to the next stitcher. Hurry now to get in the draw as you only have until the February 29th! Click here for Julie's Blog.

ORT jar labels

Pat Winter has some awesome ORT jar labels you can print off. I thought they were great fun. You might like to use them to dress up your jars.

Please prove you are not a robot

You've seen those around ~ unless you never leave comments. You probably have them on YOUR blog and lots of you don't even know it! Do us ALL a favor and turn them off! Don't give excuses about not wanting spam...I haven't used Word Verification in YEARS and I am not swamped with spam. In fact, since Blogger went with the new spam folder system I haven't received a single piece of spam...I am usually fishing proper comments out of the folder! I do moderate my comments ~ just in case there is spam AND because I receive so many comments I might miss reading them.

Here is a very good post about this topic with great instructions on how to change your settings. You can see I have stolen Tex's picture (with permission lol) and used it in my sidebar with a link to her awesome post!

The Anonymous Troll:

Another thing you need to change is the settings for WHO you allow to comment on your blog. I have seen several posts recently from blogging friends about an anonymous troll. This troll finds something to complain about you or your blog. The way you are hosting a giveaway or an RAK or simply just something to gripe. From what I understand, these comments are unusually hurtful.

Change your comment settings to only allow "Registered Users". If you have it set for "Anyone" that means anyone can comment on your blog...even anonymous trolls.

I'm very sorry if you try to comment on MY blog and you cannot because you aren't registered. I don't allow just anyone to comment on my blog. You can see I don't suffer a lack of comments because of this.

I do get troll comments (from fake registered users I assume) on the rare occasion. They get no reaction but to tap that delete button. Same thing goes for hateful email. I don't need other people's garbage so I simply don't accept delivery.

My blog. My rules. You don't like the way I do things? Don't visit! Trolls will be always be ignored if they insist on visiting.

Thank you for visiting my blog today!

Thanks for the ORT jar label link. Those are nice! I turned the word verification off on my blog -- hate that system!

Well now, I think yoou covered it all. Thanks for the info for the settings for those who do not have it set. I have always used the registered users and have not had problems.

thank you, THANK YOU for continuing the anti-word verification message!

i, too, don't allow anonymous 'trolls' to comment. :)

THANK YOU!!!!!
I am tired of reading about blogs that get these anonymous/hateful comments but yet they do NOT change their settings. I hope your suggestions here gets out to the masses. Happy Stitching :)

Well said!

Love the ORT jar labels. Thanks for your lovely blog!

Hi Sharon,
I have turned off my word verification also. It is just too annoying for words!
I don't have any restrictions on my comments. We'll see how this goes. Occasionallly I have had to delete a comment but not enough to worry about it.

Ziggyeor said...

thanks, some of the word verifications do get annoying when you're trying to visit everyone's blog to see their TUSAL reports.
Love the traveling pattern, very cute.

Thank you! I hope more bloggers turn that word crap off. I turned off mine long ago and don't allow anonymous posts. Its worked for me.

Thanks for this post, I've turned off word verification and all the other things that you suggested.

butterfly said...

You have covered it all good. Yes I changed mine too.
Thanks for the link for the labels.

I turned off my word verification last week and don't expect any problems. I am struggling though with not allowing "anonymous" comments, because if my kids want to comment they use anonymous. I'm thinking about telling them that if they want to comment on my blog they'll have to register, or they can email me or just call! Great post today... I'm off to check out the ORT labels. Enjoy your Sunday.

Will be changing my settings after this post.I wondered why a few blogs didn't have them. I have had no end of trouble de cyphering the words in the new verification option and got rather frustrated,so I don't want to frustrate others.
Thanks Daffycat

Another comment:) I have visited Pat Winter Gatherings. Thanks for the link. The dratted word verification is now switched off on my blog. :):)

A great post. I don't accept anonymous comments - not that I realised until I checked a minute ago and have turned my verification off.

I have no idea if I have any of these things on my post. If someone comments on my post, please let me know if the word verifier comes up..and I'll have to check for the registered person. My following is so few I don't think it would matter though :)

Autumn said...

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I can't tell you how much I agree with all of this!!! I've told others I publish my comments rather than use word verification and I've not had spam since! And yes, registered users. No trolls allowed.

Happy stitching!

Daffycat, you are telling the straight-up truth! Word verification is a serious waste of time and completely unnecessary.

Even if you don't moderate comments you can ALWAYS delete comments you do not like or find inappropriate. Thank you for sharing such important info!

Beth Pearce said...

Thanks for the heads up about registered users. I had seen about the word verification. I am really now sure how I am set up, so I am going there now - thanks again!

Thank you for putting it better than I did with regards to both word verification, spam and anonymous trolls! Good riddance to all of them!

That verification thing was driving me nuts too - I put it on and took it off, put it back on again when my email got loaded with Anonymous crazy comments, but I realized that Blogger was throwing them into spam, so all is good and I took it off again!

Vicky said...

Word verification is doing my head in, I have actually backed away from commenting on blogs that have this,

Carol said...

I'm so pleased to see so many have turned off their word verification--sure makes commenting easier and more enjoyable :)

Anne said...

Yup, turned it off about a week ago. No need for us to bang our heads over our comps!! I also clicked the " no anonymous can comment here" while I was at it since I noticed the spam I was getting was from anonymous users!! Great post for everyone to read and change their blogs!!!

I've turned the WV off on mine too, it is horrid, I find I'm guessing them half the time, clearly I have the eyesight of a robot.

Kate said...

I can't stand the word verification so I've turned it off my blog and now moderate all comments. Thanks for the hints.

Pumpkin said...

YES! This whole new word verification thing sucks >:o( I never use it but I moderate my comments like you do. I hardly have any problems and like this way the best :o)

Michelle said...

Thank you so much I have recently been on the receiving end of this 'Anon' person. Thanks for your guidance xx

Rachel S-H said...

Thank you for the link to how to change the setting. The funny thing is, I don't think those words you put in have to be that accurate. How could any human read some of those words? LOL. I went to the not allowing anonymous comments. If someone wants to post something negative, they need to own their words.

demeter83 said...

Hey hun.
Would you mind letting me know how you turn off word verification? I've tried to do it a couple of times and can't work out how to do it. I'd be really grateful.
Thanks

I hadn't realised I even had word verification on my blog! You're right though, they ARE annoying, and I've disabled it now...

Re: word verification.. *set scene: A BIG CHOIR*

Singing in agreement. LOL!!!!

As for the anonymous thing, I don't have this set to off, and I recently received a comment from a friend who was listed as Anonymous. I knew who she was cos of the topic in question, and when I emailed her to let her know, found that she was was reading from a 'flaky' ereader. I wonder how often that happens....

TxEm said...

I HATE those word verify things, ESPECIALLY the ones that don't even have a real word. I never have a fair chance. Thanks for spreading the word!

Elena said...

First Thank you for the labels. They are cute.

Second, I agree with you on the word verification. They are hard to read at time.

msmartello said...

You said it sister! The trolls need to take a hike!! I better check my blog. I am a little blog illiterate but I'm working on it.

Sharon said...

I have done both of those things on my blog! I can't understand why someone wants to go to the trouble of being so tacky! They need to find better things to do! Thanks for the ort label link.

Tessa said...

love the pop up comment box, love dis-enabling (is that a word?) the word verification.

Thank you for your helpful post today :)

Hello. Iv'e just found your blog c/o Sue's Krafty Kards and other stuff! I am a sewer and just might join up with your TUSAL but I will see how big a jar I would need first cos I do lots of sewing and might need extra storage to cope :-)
Hugs,

Cops are on their way to you for pinching my pic lol.

I hate this new word verification!!! Mines turned off.

Lynn said...

Thanks for the link to the ort labels. They're wonderful!!

I have never used the verification since I started blogging and I also have never had a problem with spam.
For now I allow all comments because several of my stitching group don't have blogs. You can bet that will change though if I am paid a visit by any trolls. I don't have any use for them!

Colorado Stitcher said...

Great ideas all, but I have some not so computer savy family members and friends who occasionally like to comment and with out the let anyone commenet they would not be able too. This is why I like the blogger setting to let me moderate and approve comments before posting. I do get some oddball things and I don't take them personally, I just delete them. I do feel the word verification is unnecessary, especially if you moderate the posts. I also like the moderation because once in while someone will comment on a post a week or so old and I would have missed the comment otherwise. Thanks for all the great tips, blogging and otherwise that you provide.

Thank you so much

Thank you for the link of the orts labels, they're too cute!

I don't like the new word verification system either. I turned mine off, but to be honest I've received spam messages since then. However, I have my comments on moderation so all of them have to be approved before they hit my blog.

Those ort tags are awesome. Thanks for sharing.
