ORT jar labels
Pat Winter has some awesome ORT jar labels you can print off. I thought they were great fun. You might like to use them to dress up your jars.
Please prove you are not a robot
You've seen those around ~ unless you never leave comments. You probably have them on YOUR blog and lots of you don't even know it! Do us ALL a favor and turn them off! Don't give excuses about not wanting spam...I haven't used Word Verification in YEARS and I am not swamped with spam. In fact, since Blogger went with the new spam folder system I haven't received a single piece of spam...I am usually fishing proper comments out of the folder! I do moderate my comments ~ just in case there is spam AND because I receive so many comments I might miss reading them.
Here is a very good post about this topic with great instructions on how to change your settings. You can see I have stolen Tex's picture (with permission lol) and used it in my sidebar with a link to her awesome post!
The Anonymous Troll:
Another thing you need to change is the settings for WHO you allow to comment on your blog. I have seen several posts recently from blogging friends about an anonymous troll. This troll finds something to complain about you or your blog. The way you are hosting a giveaway or an RAK or simply just something to gripe. From what I understand, these comments are unusually hurtful.
Change your comment settings to only allow "Registered Users". If you have it set for "Anyone" that means anyone can comment on your blog...even anonymous trolls.
I'm very sorry if you try to comment on MY blog and you cannot because you aren't registered. I don't allow just anyone to comment on my blog. You can see I don't suffer a lack of comments because of this.
I do get troll comments (from fake registered users I assume) on the rare occasion. They get no reaction but to tap that delete button. Same thing goes for hateful email. I don't need other people's garbage so I simply don't accept delivery.
My blog. My rules. You don't like the way I do things? Don't visit! Trolls will be always be ignored if they insist on visiting.

Well now, I think yoou covered it all. Thanks for the info for the settings for those who do not have it set. I have always used the registered users and have not had problems.

I have turned off my word verification also. It is just too annoying for words!
I don't have any restrictions on my comments. We'll see how this goes. Occasionallly I have had to delete a comment but not enough to worry about it.
thanks, some of the word verifications do get annoying when you're trying to visit everyone's blog to see their TUSAL reports.

I turned off my word verification last week and don't expect any problems. I am struggling though with not allowing "anonymous" comments, because if my kids want to comment they use anonymous. I'm thinking about telling them that if they want to comment on my blog they'll have to register, or they can email me or just call! Great post today... I'm off to check out the ORT labels. Will be changing my settings after this post.I wondered why a few blogs didn't have them. I have had no end of trouble de cyphering the words in the new verification option and got rather frustrated,so I don't want to frustrate others.

A great post. I don't accept anonymous comments - not that I realised until I checked a minute ago and have turned my verification off.
Robot protection is important but those are a little too difficult.

I have no idea if I have any of these things on my post. If someone comments on my post, please let me know if the word verifier comes up..and I'll have to check for the registered person. My following is so few I don't think it would matter though :)
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I can't tell you how much I agree with all of this!!! I've told others I publish my comments rather than use word verification and I've not had spam since! And yes, registered users. No trolls allowed.

Daffycat, you are telling the straight-up truth! Word verification is a serious waste of time and completely unnecessary.
Even if you don't moderate comments you can ALWAYS delete comments you do not like or find inappropriate. Thank you for sharing such important info!

That verification thing was driving me nuts too - I put it on and took it off, put it back on again when my email got loaded with Anonymous crazy comments, but I realized that Blogger was throwing them into spam, so all is good and I took it off again!
Word verification is doing my head in, I have actually backed away from commenting on blogs that have this,

Yup, turned it off about a week ago. No need for us to bang our heads over our comps!! I also clicked the " no anonymous can comment here" while I was at it since I noticed the spam I was getting was from anonymous users!! Great post for everyone to read and change their blogs!!!
I've turned the WV off on mine too, it is horrid, I find I'm guessing them half the time, clearly I have the eyesight of a robot.

Thank you for the link to how to change the setting. The funny thing is, I don't think those words you put in have to be that accurate. How could any human read some of those words? LOL. I went to the not allowing anonymous comments. If someone wants to post something negative, they need to own their words.

As for the anonymous thing, I don't have this set to off, and I recently received a comment from a friend who was listed as Anonymous. I knew who she was cos of the topic in question, and when I emailed her to let her know, found that she was was reading from a 'flaky' ereader. I wonder how often that happens....
I HATE those word verify things, ESPECIALLY the ones that don't even have a real word. I never have a fair chance. Thanks for spreading the word!

I have never used the verification since I started blogging and I also have never had a problem with spam.
For now I allow all comments because several of my stitching group don't have blogs. You can bet that will change though if I am paid a visit by any trolls. I don't have any use for them!
Great ideas all, but I have some not so computer savy family members and friends who occasionally like to comment and with out the let anyone commenet they would not be able too. This is why I like the blogger setting to let me moderate and approve comments before posting. I do get some oddball things and I don't take them personally, I just delete them. I do feel the word verification is unnecessary, especially if you moderate the posts. I also like the moderation because once in while someone will comment on a post a week or so old and I would have missed the comment otherwise. Thanks for all the great tips, blogging and otherwise that you provide.

I don't like the new word verification system either. I turned mine off, but to be honest I've received spam messages since then. However, I have my comments on moderation so all of them have to be approved before they hit my blog.
